Why yes, we speak cheese

The Calf & Kid is a small, customer service driven cheese shop in the hopping Melrose Market in Capitol Hill. We carry cheese from around the world, with a focus on locally produced products from farms all over the Pacific Northwest. We make it our mission to build lasting relationships with the cheese makers and distributors we work with, so that we may offer a rich, informative experience for each and every customer. Come in for a taste, you'll leave with a cheese you love and a story to tell about it.

In addition to our retail counter, we offer events like cheese tasting classes and farm tours to help further your exposure to the wonderful world of cheese.

Long, long ago in NYC

I suppose my love affair with cheese really began as a child growing up on a small farm outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We owned a Nubian goat named Mocha, and I grew up helping my mom milk her every morning and enjoying everything from fresh milk to farmer's cheese to goat milk ice cream.

My re-introduction to cheese came years later, when the Bedford Cheese Shop opened around the corner from my apartment in Brooklyn, New York. The mongers there were personable, knowledgable, and the more I ate and learned the more I wanted to keep trying, tasting, and absorbing all of it. A few years later my husband and I relocated to Seattle, home of one of the most thriving food scenese in the country. Within a couple of weeks we set out to find out local cheese shop, and I was shocked there wasn't one in every neighborhood. It took a while for me to finally decide that I would be the one to remedy this, but once I did I never looked back.
